While galvanized steel is highly rust-resistant, it is not 100% “rust-proof” forever. In most environments, the zinc coating protects the steel for 50 to 100 years. Eventually, the zinc will sacrifice itself completely, but this takes decades. In harsh coastal or industrial areas, this timeline may be shorter, but it still significantly outperforms untreated or painted steel.
