Wood is porous, meaning it absorbs moisture. During a Canadian winter, that moisture freezes and expands inside the wood, causing the fibers to crack and the paint to flake off. Over time, these “micro-cracks” lead to deep rot. Steel is dimensionally stable; it does not absorb water or change shape when temperatures drop. It stays rigid and secure through the harshest -40°C nights and sudden spring thaws.
