History of Quonset Buildings
Quonset buildings were first built in 1941 for the United States Navy. Originally, they served as all-purpose, lightweight buildings that could easily be shipped anywhere and quickly assembled without the need for skilled labor. Original Quonset huts were 16 feet wide by 36 feet long and framed with steel members, though a range of sizes was made available.
Anywhere from 150,000 to 170,000 of these huts were created during World War II, with a surplus sold to the public after the war ended, which was when they began to gain popularity as multipurpose buildings, including the Quonset huts in Canada. Many are still standing at military museums and historic sites.
